ASA - Australia Spearfishing Academy

About ASA

Australian Spearfishing Academy came about in 2007 from the desire of Simon Trippe and Andrew Harvey to educate the next generation of spearfishers on ethics and safety.

Their view is that when spearfishing is practiced in a wise and ethical way it is a most enduring form of fishing in regard to selectivity, bycatch, and habitat loss.

Our Mission

We promote spearfishing as a healthy and meaningful pursuit that provides enjoyment, and food for the table.

By providing our insights, hands on training and bespoke learning spearfishing can be embraced by anyone.

Dive with our passion for spearfishing.

Ethical Behaviour

ASA believes that when you put on a wetsuit you are wearing a uniform that sees you representing all the spearo tribe, so your actions and behaviour, in and out of the water, reflect back on us all.

ASA’s passionate teachings of respect and maintaining integrity with the ocean and its other users leave a lasting impression.

Spearfishing Safely

With over 7 decades of experience Andrew and Simon have witnessed and experienced much in the water.

They are highly skilled instructors who have introduced thousands of people, all ages and shapes and sizes, safely into the marine world. Our mantra to students “One up one down”

Attitudes

ASA have a relaxed way of passing our knowledge to you. We listen to what you wish to achieve and work on delivering that for you.

Depth and times mean little, this is spearfishing we do, it is meant to be enjoyable, we encourage a good time before anything.

Teaching

Our workshops are both theoretical and practical where we work on your mental approach, streamlining, relaxation in the water, and of course, hunting in its many forms is revealed.

About your Teachers

Simon

Simon Trippe

Spearfishing is a big part of my life.

Having a father who lives and breathes spearfishing it was inevitable that I too became entranced with the underwater world that surrounds us.

Growing up I fortunately had many great diving mentors, I still do.

Becoming a student under Erez Beatus, Director of Apnea International, I became aware of the need to pass on safe practice in spearfishing.

I get a tremendous buzz out of assisting people, sharing their excitement, and seeing them overcome hurdles becoming further engaged with the life aquatic.

Andrew Harvey

I was introduced to spearfishing, while in high school diving Stradbroke Island and Noosa with one of Queensland’s pioneering spearfisher’s.

Moving to Sydney I was fortunate enough to come under the tutelage of some of Australia best blue water and competition spear fisherman.

I am always interested in the technique and innovation of equipment used chasing large Bluewater fish.

Sharing ideas, tactics and teaching others is extremely rewarding and enjoyable

Andrew
